How to Choose Your First Snowboard
(Without Getting It Wrong!)
Buying your first snowboard is one of the most exciting things you'll do. There are so many boards on the market and some of the graphics are insanely good, choosing the correct snowboard can be a bit of a minefield. First off, don't buy on graphic alone, it's the easiest way to potentially waste a few hundred quid if you get it wrong.
We've seen it happen more times than we'd like to admit — someone buys a board that looks great online, gets to the mountain, and struggles all week because it's completely wrong for them.
So let's sort that out before it happens to you!
Length Matters More Than You Think
The old "hold the board next to you and it should reach your chin" rule? Ignore it. Board length is really about your weight and how you want to ride. A heavier rider on a board that's too short will feel like they're riding a skateboard on ice — sketchy and unstable at speed. A lighter rider on a board that's too long will fight it through every turn.
As a rough guide, if you're just starting out, go slightly shorter than your weight suggests. A shorter board is easier to control, more forgiving, and a lot more fun when you're still finding your feet.
You'll find rider weight recommendations on all the snowboards we stock which is a good starting point. Alongside this, if you have a UK10.5+ snowboard boot then you'd probably be better off on a 'wide' snowboard to minimise toe / ankle drag.
Camber, Rocker, Hybrid, 3BT — What Does It All Mean?
Don't let the tech talk put you off. Here's the simple version:
Camber is the traditional shape — the board arches up in the middle when laid flat. It's poppy, precise, and brilliant for carving. It's also a bit less forgiving if you're still figuring out your edge control.
Pure rocker and flat boards do exist, but honestly, most brands have moved on. The sweet spot these days is hybrid profiles — boards that combine camber underfoot for pop and edge control, with rocker in the tip and tail to keep things catch-free and forgiving. You get the best of both worlds: grip when you want it, forgiveness when you need it.
One brand doing something genuinely different is Bataleon. Their Triple Base Technology (3BT) takes a full camber board and lifts the edges on the tip and tail slightly upward . The result is a board that has all the pop and response of camber, but is far more catch-free on take-offs and much more forgiving on rails and jumps. It sounds technical but on snow it just feels... fun. Really fun. We're massive fans of Bataleon here and stock a big range — well worth a look if you want something a bit different from the crowd.
Soft Flex = Easier Life
Flex is how stiff or bendy a board is, usually rated 1–10. For beginners, you want something in the 2–4 range. A softer board forgives mistakes, makes turning easier, and doesn't punish you when your technique isn't perfect yet — which, let's be honest, it won't be on day one.
Stiffer boards are for experienced riders who want precision at speed. Save that for later.
Get the Right Advice
Honestly? The best thing you can do is talk to someone who actually rides. Not a generic online quiz, not a forum post from 2019 — a real person who lives for snowboarding and knows the kit inside-out.
That's literally what we're here for. We ride everything we stock. Drop us a message, give us a call on 01252 612223, or come into the shop in Fleet and we'll get you sorted.
